Carpet and pricing, explained
One price per square foot covers carpet, pad, labor, furniture help, take-up and haul-away. Here's exactly how your number is built.
Step 1
Choose a carpet grade
I buy every carpet and pad at wholesale and pass the savings on to you. I'm an installer, not a salesperson, so you get better materials for less. Quoted a carpet somewhere else? Send me the style name and I can usually source it for less.

Step 3
You pay for carpet ordered, not floor measured
Carpet comes on 12-foot-wide rolls. Every piece is cut 3 inches long so it can be stretched and tucked at the wall. So a 10 × 10 room orders 12 ft × 10 ft 3 in, which is 123 sq ft.
Every store does this math. Most just don't show it. I'll walk you through the numbers for each room at your estimate.
Example: 10 × 10 bedroom
Step 4
Seams, planned with you
Rooms wider than 12 feet need a seam. You choose which matters more to you.
Example: a 15 × 15 room (225 sq ft of floor). The main piece covers 11 ft 9 in once its seam edge is trimmed straight. A fill strip 3 ft 4 in wide covers the rest: 3 ft 3 in, plus 1 inch to fit the seam. Every piece is still cut 3 inches long, so each one runs 15 ft 3 in.
Option 1: Fewest seams

What's ordered off the 12 ft roll
Cut 2: 12 ft × 15 ft 3 in
A second full-length cut. The 3 ft 4 in fill strip comes off one side, so the seam is a single long, straight line.
The gray part, about 8 ft 8 in wide, is left over.
Best when a seam would be easy to see: big open rooms, or where light crosses the floor.
Option 2: Least carpet
3 seamsYour room, seen from above
What's ordered off the 12 ft roll
Cut 2: 12 ft × 5 ft 4 in
A full-width piece only 5 ft 4 in long. It's sliced down the length, with the pile, into three strips 3 ft 4 in wide (1, 2, 3).
The strips are laid end to end down the fill side of the room, so their pile runs the same way as the main piece. Each covers 5 ft 1 in of the room, plus 3 inches to fit.
The gray part, about 2 ft wide, is left over.
119 sq ft less carpet. The two short seams sit in the fill strip along one wall, where we place them in low-traffic spots or under furniture.
Arrows (↓) show the direction the carpet's pile runs: every piece runs the same way. Diagrams are drawn to scale, except the seam lines, which are thickened so you can see them.
- Never across doorways
- Not alongside big sunny windows
- Hidden in low-traffic spots or under furniture
- CRI 105 installation standard as the guide
